GENDER EQUALITY BILL UNDER WAY

The minister of health and acting minister of Gender says a Gender Equality Bill will be tabled in Parliament to advance gender equality in the country.

Speaking during a high level panel discussion on empowering young women in agriculture and agribusiness the acting minister says the bill is underway to Parliament for tabling.

“South Sudan has rectified the Maputo protocol and other conventions and now the Gender Equality Bill is under way,” said Minister Sarah Cleto

Hon. Sarah Cleto says the bill if passed will propose the establishment of the National Gender Authority.

“The bill proposes the establishment of the national gender equality authority which will improve the institutionalize of gender equality in all sectors in the country,” the minister added.

Minister Sarah says despite there being no proven data to see the inequality gap in the gender responsiveness in the country, there is need for organizations to work together to provide the data.

“Despite the gender inequality data not probably documented, I want urge partners to work together with the minister to improve on the data system for gender equality in the country” Mrs Sarah affirmed.

On his part, Hussein Abdelbagi the minister for agriculture and food security reaffirmed governments commitment to supporting the agricultural sector to improve the economy and livelihood of South Sudanese.

“I want to reaffirm governments commitment to supporting and improving the agricultural sector in the country, because it’s only through agriculture that we can be able to bring back out economy to life and improve the livelihood of our people,” Abdelbagi said.

Delphine Serumaga the UN Women country representative says her organization will continue to support the young girls in dream to pursue agriculture as their dream.

“As UN Women, we shall be available to continue rendering our support to those Young women who dream to pursue agriculture as their dream, because we believe through agriculture, lives can be improved in South Sudan,” Mrs Serumaga said.

The high level panel discussion held in Juba brought together stakeholders from different walks of life.
