ENACT COPYRIGHT LAW CONCERNED ARTISTS URGE GOVERNMENT

Juba - South Sudan: South Sudanese artists are urging the government to fast-track the enactment and enforcement of a national copyright law to protect creative works and ensure fair compensation for those in the arts industry.

The call was made during a press conference held in Juba by a group of concerned artists who said the absence of an operational copyright framework continues to expose musicians, filmmakers, painters, writers, and other creatives to widespread piracy and exploitation.

According to the artists, a strong legal foundation is essential for the growth of the country’s creative economy and for encouraging young talents to invest in their craft without fear of intellectual theft.

In addition to the appeal for copyright legislation, the artists proposed the establishment of the Kiir Mayardit Art Center, a national facility they envision as a hub for cultural development, training, exhibitions, and artistic innovation. They said the center would not only preserve South Sudan’s diverse cultural heritage but also offer opportunities for artists to refine their skills and showcase their work.

The artists further stressed that supporting the creative sector is key to nation-building, job creation, and promoting South Sudan’s identity on regional and global stages.

They called on policymakers, cultural institutions, and development partners to join hands in advancing the proposed reforms and strengthening the country’s cultural landscape.
