MAKAS WATER YARD BRINGS HOPE TO COMMUNITIES IN AKOBO EAST COUNTY

Akobo East County: Communities in the Markas area of Akobo East County, Jonglei State, are celebrating improved access to clean and safe water following the establishment of a new water yard supported by Save the Children.

The Markas Water Yard, constructed with, is providing reliable and safe water to hundreds of households who previously depended on distant and unsafe water sources from River Nile.

For years, residents of Markas faced daily challenges in accessing clean water, often walking long distances to fetch water from rivers and open wells that were prone to contamination. Today, the new facility has transformed that reality.

Mary Nyagachol a member of the water yard protection committee says the yard has help improve water supply in the committee.

“We used to fetch water from the river, which was unsafe, especially during the rainy season,” Now we can get clean water nearby. Our children are healthier, and we have more time for other activities.” Said Mary Nyagachol.

Wuyual Bol says since the construction of the water yard, the community has seen a reduction in waterborne diseases such as diarrhea and typhoid.

“This initiative by Save the Children has greatly improved the health and wellbeing of our people,” Access to clean water means fewer illnesses and stronger families.” Said Bol.

To ensure sustainability, the community has established a Water Management Committee responsible for overseeing the maintenance and fair distribution of water within the area.

With Save the Children’s support, the Markas Water Yard is not just delivering clean water it is restoring health, dignity, and hope to families in Akobo East County, paving the way for a stronger and more resilient community.
